VIDEO Films from Japan and China take their toll of awards at Fantasporto 44th edition

JAPAN won with FROM THE END OF THE WORLD, USA took top honors (BUCKY F*UCKING DENT by DAVID DUCHOVNY), China with THE CREATION OF THE GODS and Portugal with DEPARTURES : the big winners of FANTASPORTO 2024

The 44th edition of Fantasporto – Porto International Film Festival has come to an end, although on Sunday, voting day for the legislative elections, eight of the films awarded by the four Juries of the event, for the competitive Fantastic Cinema Sections, Directors' Week-Prize Manoel de Oliveira, Orient Express, Cinema Português and Escolas de Cinema will also be shown from 3pm at Batalha (programming in attach).

In a year in which cinema from Mainland China debuts in force at Fantasporto, in the Fantastic Cinema category the festival was once again won by Japanese Cinema. The Best Film in this section went this time to From the End of the World – Kaz I Kiriya who won the GRAND PRIZE FOR BEST FILM.

THE GRAND PRIZE FOR THE BEST FILM OF THE DIRECTORS' WEEK / MANOEL DE OLIVEIRA AWARD went to the North American Bucky F*cking Dent – David Duchovny and the Japanese feature film Shadow of Fire - Shinya Tsukamoto wins the SPECIAL JURI PRIZE.

IN THE ORIENT EXPRESS SECTION DEDICATED TO ASIAN CINEMA, this year with 21 films in competition the winner went to the Chinese Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms by Wuershan, the SPECIAL JURY PRIZE for The Floor Plan by Junichi Ishikawa also being assigned a SPECIAL MENTION to the also Japanese The Forbidden Play by multi-award winner Hideo Nakata.

Also, at CINEMA PORTUGÊS, the GRAND PRIZE was awarded to the Luso/Chequia co-production Departures by Vasco Viana and the prize for SCHOOLS with Cinema courses, in which 9 schools participated, went to I forgot that I was afraid of Diogo Bento from the Lusófona University of Lisbon

This year's selection, based on around 1200 films from 68 countries around the world and submitted to the Festival, ended after the selection carried out by fantasporto, which screened films from countries as diverse as Japan, with 11 films (country with the most significant number of films in competition, Argentina, Brazil, South Korea, China, Philippines, Iran, Mexico, India, United States, Estonia, Hungary, Canada, Kazakhstan, and the most diverse European countries, highlighting France and Spain with 6 films each, included 97, all of them unreleased in Portugal, and these were shown in the World Premiere.

Some international media titles present on Fantasporto make the quality and diversity of the selected films clear. The largest magazine in the Entertainment World, Variety, in articles published during the festival, refers to “Fantasporto Presents Eclectic Lineup Ranging From Denys Arcand's Satire 'Testament' to Wuershan's Fantasy Epic 'Creation of Gods'nbsp;or in another article “Fantasporto Chiefs Beatriz Pacheco Pereira and Mário Dorminsky on Spotting Rising Talent in the World of Fantasy”, in turn Euronews headlines “Horror, humour, music and more: Is Fantasporto the ultimate film festival?nbsp;nbsp; And many others thatnbsp;nbsp;already were compiled halfway through the festival and can be found on the Facebook page @fantasporto. There is also coverage work for a large part of the national media such as Expresso, Jornal de Notícias, Correio da Manhã, RTP, SIC, Antena 1, etc.

It is also important to mention the approximately 120 foreign guestsnbsp; (about half of them Asian...) and more than 100 nationalsnbsp; who are still in Porto to witness the official closing session and awards ceremony on the 9th, today, it will take place, were at Fantasporto, including members of the International juries.

The diversity of films awarded in the different sections demonstrates the quality of the selection and the need for jurors to distribute their awards across the most diverse films in the competition. It should be noted that almost all of the films presented were applauded at the end of the sessions and that some of them had applause for more than 5 minutes, especially those whose directors were present in the room.
