Flying to Ankara for Flying Broom!

14th
Flying Broom International Women’s Film Festival hosts many filmmakers
from all over the world in May in Ankara. The opposing voice of Iranian
cinema, Tahmineh Milani; young talent of Cuban cinema, Prakriti Maduro;
the director filming menopause for the first time, Paula Palacios; an
original voice from Belgium, Vanja D’alcanatara; and Efua Dorkenoo who
portrays grassroots movement against female genital mutilation in Africa
are just a few of the guests of the festival.

With their assertive films

The Iranian director, Tahmineh Milani
with whom the followers of Flying Broom are closely acquainted is one
of the favorites of the festival this year with her new film “Payback”.
Milani who adapts women’s problems into cinema with a bold language and
an uncommon humor, and opposes gender inequality in her films, is known
for opposing identity in her country. This year, Milani is coming to
Ankara as a guest of the festival to fulfill the movie lovers’ longing
for her conversations. The courageous master of the women’s cinema will
interview with the movie lovers after the screening of her film.

Another director, who is coming to Ankara with her new film for FIPRESCI Award, is Vanja D’alcantara. D’alcantara is the guest of the festival with the film called “Beyond the Steppes”
which tells a political story of Kazakhstan steppess that will be in
minds for a long time will. The director will answer the questions of
the audience after the screening of her film.

Filmed menopause

The
director of the documentary “Women No Pause”’ which shows how the
period of menopause, the common feature of the middle-aged women, is
experienced in different cultures, Paula Palacios will also be in
Ankara! Palacios will attend the screening of her film;and a medical
doctor and a psychologist will inform the audience about menopause in
the interview that will be held after the film.

From Cuba with love…

And Prakriti Maduro… The sparkling young talent of Cuban cinema, Maduro is coming to the festival with her film “Habana Eva”
which is accompanied by colorful images of Cuba. In this romantic
comedy, which will appear before jury for FIPRESCI Award, Prakriti
Maduro staring as Eva is expected to make a choice between two men and
she finalizes her choice with a surprising decision.

 The “voice” of Africa

None of the documentaries in the festival can be missed, like the crew of Flying Broom says. One of the great documentaries is “Africa Rising”. The narrator of the film, Efua Dorkenoo
who adapts the rising reaction of women and men against female genital
mutilation into cinema is one of the surprises of the festival. Dorkenoo
will attend the screening of her film, because she ‘has a lot of things
to tell’to her audience.

For the first time in Ankara!

Worldwide known cinema organization Women Make Movies is in Ankara for the first time! Kristen M. Fitzpatrick is
‘flying’ to Ankara from the USA as a guest of the Flying Broom and she
will not be empty-handed. The films’ which will be shown in the festival
in cooperation with Women Make Movies, are in Fitzpatrick’s suitcase.
In the panel called “Women’s Organization in Cinema” which will take
place in Goethe Institut Ankara, one of the favorite places of Flying
Broom’s followers, Kristen M. Fitzpatrick will make a speech on behalf
