Music for All at Titanic International Film Festival

user
2012 Titanic International Film Festival has a very strong selection of tour docs. Never Make It Home documents Kirk Rundstrom's last months. The hell-raising lead singer/guitarist of Wichita "insurgent country" band Split Lip Rayfield was diagnosed with termin...

MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS: THE BEGINNING

by Robert BarryThe competition was stiff. Amongst the other nominees were Herbie Hancock’s ‘Rockit’, Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’, the Tobe Hooper-directed clip for Billy Idol’s ‘Dancing With Myself’, and the epic $500,000 mini-movie of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. But the first ever MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year went to the number 7 hit, ‘You Might Think’ from Bostonian new-wavers, The Cars.Opening in a computer-generated apartment with...

Music Video Critique: Handsome Furs - "What About Us"

user
Français German Here at ÉCU we haven’t shied away from bringing you awesome music videos that also tread that very thin (and much discussed) line between art and erotica. After ‘Baby Baby Baby’ and ‘Bombay’, a video that pushed the boundaries even further caught our eye: The new Handsome Furs video for  ‘What About Us’, directed by Scott Coffey. Warning: Extremely NSFW. Seriously, unless you work in the porn industry, or your boss is a liberal...

Making The Girl Dance: Guerilla Videos at Their Best

user
by Marc Rickenbach Baby, Baby, Baby Kill me French duo Make the Girl Dance pretty much make it clear that they deserve the award for best use of a marketing budget. In the age of the flip-cam, iMovie and all the other cheap filmmaking paraphernalia that is too easy to get your hands on and use, music videos continue to cost labels a boat-ton of cash for over-the-top productions that more often than not fail to balance the books. Who knows why, but it’s the ca...

Going Underground. Filming on the Paris Metro with Paul Bryan

user
By Claire Leonard, ÉCU Writer Underground systems throughout the world have long held a magnetic attraction for filmmakers.  Be it the perpetual bustle of commuters, the transient nature of encounters, the stark strip-lighting or the endless labyrinthine, white-tiled corridors –there is a quality which brings filmmakers time and time again underground into these man-made environments to explore our inner lives. Earlier this year, the young filmmaker Paul Bryan captu...

Tony Murnahan: An Indie Filmmaker

user
Tony Murnahan is a young, Fayetteville-based filmmaker who has already lived multiple lives. After retiring from touring in rock bands, his buddy Joe Stauffer helped Tony transition into producing multi-angle, live, rock videos for local NC bands. Tony sold much of his musical equipment so he could afford the very basics needed for creating videos. Thus Murnahan’s own production company, Stwrongtone Media, was born. After filming countless live performances,...

Los Angeles Music Video Festival

Third Annual Los Angeles Music Video Festival will run May 1st-4th, 2013.

Submission deadline is February 15th.

Music videos are powerful creative units that serve many purposes. They are marketing tools for bands, promotional reels for filmmakers, storytelling experiments...they are perhaps the most flexible, visceral and accessible film format, purely focused on the combination of sound and image. And yet, music videos have all but disappeared from television, even as the number of music videos being produced has burgeoned. YouTube, Vimeo and MySpace may "house" videos, but there is less and less opportunity for videos to be showcased and celebrated. A precious few receive the attention they deserve.

The Los Angeles Music Video Festival exists with one purpose: to celebrate the art of the music video. While many film festivals have music video categories, there was no annual live festival in the United States (and only a handful in the world) dedicated to the format 100%. LAMVF provides a unique opportunity for aspiring musicians and aspiring filmmakers to showcase their music videos. More importantly, the Festival will bring together the independent music and independent film communities of Los Angeles in a celebration of local musical talent and creativity like never before.

After two great years, the Los Angeles Music Video Festival (LAMVF) is thrilled to announce it's 3rd Annual festival will be held over four evenings at the beautiful Downtown Independent Theater May 1-4, 2013.  If you make music, make videos, like music videos or know anyone who does, come be a part of the movement to save music videos.

Making films is a great way to express yourself creatively, work within a fun industry and also make a living while you’re at it. So how do you get into this industry? The answer is often much easier than people think. At a Spike Less conference in Toronto conference a couple of years ago, Mr. Lee addressed this very question from an ambitious film student. This film student stood up and asked her question about breaking into the film industry. It seemed that no matter how hard she searched ...
