XXVIII. Black International Cinema Berlin 2013
Entry Form Information - SUBMISSION DEADLINE:...
BLACK INTERNATIONAL CINEMA
is a yearly interdisciplinary, intercultural film/video festival produced and directed by Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre / THE COLLEGIUM - Forum & Television Program Berlin in association with Cultural Zephyr e.V. and screens cinema from the African Diaspora and other films from varied intercultural backgrounds or perspectives.
Black International Cinema Berlin originated from the Black Cultural Festival, which was produced and directed by Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre in 1986 for the first time in Europe, a 3-week event in Berlin, which presented the contributions of Black people to world culture through film, theater, dance, music, workshops and seminars, and was an homage to the legendary tap dancer, Carnell Lyons.
The venues were the Theatermanufaktur am Halleschen Ufer from March 3-16, music – dance – theatre; Hochschule der Künste Berlin on March 11, symposium; Kino Arsenal from March 17-23, film.
Organization and Artistic Direction: Prof. Gayle McKinney Griffith (USA/Berlin), Prof. Donald Muldrow Griffith (USA/Berlin), Donald Muldrow McKinney Griffith II (USA/Berlin), Dr. Ntongela Masilela (South Africa); in cooperation with: Prof. Dr. Abdul Alkalimat (USA), Uazuvara Ewald Katjivena (Namibia), Getinet Belay (Ethiopia), Joliba Africa Center; Organization: Erika Gregor (Arsenal Cinema, Germany); Organization Assistance: Annette Koschmieder (Germany)
Since then, Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre produces and directs the Black International Cinema each year in Berlin and additionally, in other European and US-American cities.
The festival focuses on presenting works of an artistic, cultural or political nature coinciding with the general educational, social, artistic and economic interest of people from Africa, the African Diaspora and people with an interest in participating in intercultural communication and the resultant interfacing and sharing of educational, social, artistic and economic resources.
Furthermore, Black International Cinema is open to ALL filmmakers and contributes to better understanding and increasing cooperation between people from various cultural, ethnic, national and religious backgrounds, in order to reduce prejudice and support a peaceful and respectful living together in our multi-faceted societies.
Black International Cinema is a festival based upon our mission statement and the objectives and methods as stated within the entry form.
Based on treatments that young and talented filmmakers had to submit by October 1, 2012, a three-member jury will pick the winner of the €15,000 fellowship. The jury has already been put together and includes three members who are closely associated with German cinema. All three want to actively support up-and-coming German filmmakers.

Durban, 26 July: Day 2
The miserable weather is busy getting the better of me as I spent most of the day in bed.
As I am in Durban for the film festival at great expense, I dragged myself out of bed for the night's delights.
I planned to see Dog Sweat at 22:00, but decided to rather skip that.
The two films that were shown tonight are both in competition and both are good - one is exceptional, in fact.
It's good to see young African directors at the festival and Andrew Dosunmu...
Shahrukh Khan's new film“Don 2 – The Chase Continues” introduces the German Capital to Bollywood filmlovers. One of the top three destinations in Europe, after London and Paris, it registered an increase in the number of Indian visitors by 43 percent in 2010. Now, Berliners would like Don 2 to make the city even more popular with Indians.
Burkhard Kieker, CEO, visitBerlin says "Don 2 has two starring roles, Shah Rukh Khan and Berlin.” What's Shahrukh's considered opinion of...

Film choices are often based on schedule availability....grabbing a screening in between meetings or making sure one is awake to catch the early morning press screenings of the Competition program. 19 years of contravision film festival
1993 - 2011
contravision - a film festival for those who not only want to passively watch films but want to make films themselves. underground films, independent and inventive, versatile, insubordinate, funny or melancholy, low budget or no budget but with great ambition. contravision doesn’t see itself solely as a competition but aims at increasing media awareness among both the filmmakers and the audience.
at contravision, the audience and not a jury of professionals is asked to chose the winners of the festival. we want to present the audience with highlights of creative film making by unknown directors and future stars with a focus on original ideas and imaginative realisation instead of technical sophistication.
the purpose is to refocus the publics attention on independent short films that are produced off the beaten track of mainstream cinema and therefore are often excluded from the commercial cinema circuits.

The weather this Berlinale has been more or less "as usual" -- chilly, around freezing every day, a few snowflakes in the air, and brightly overcast -- no sunshine, but bright cloudy days casting a bright silver haze on the cobblestone meadows of Potsdamer Platz -- the kind of bracing weather that makes one happy to be inside a warm cinema rather than out on a tempting beach ... like at Cannes, Venice, or San Sebastian.
Berlinale veterans --which means anyone who was here before...
